Hydrogen-induced Neuroprotection in Neonatal Hypoxic-ischemic Encephalopathy

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains to be a major cause of morbidity, mortality and severe neurodevelopmental disability in term neonates. Moderate whole body hypothermia is an established, effective neuroprotective therapy reduce long-term associated with HIE, however, research for adjunct therapies still warranted complement the effect hypothermia. In last decade, molecular hydrogen emerged as simple, available, inexpensive substance advantageous pharmacokinetics ameliorate hypoxic-ischemic cellular damage. The present review examines preclinical studies employing combat deleterious consequences insults rodent piglet HIE models. Hydrogen exerted unequivocal actions shown by preserved neurovascular function, neuronal viability, neurocognitive functions virtually all model species insult types tested. Administration started most after enhancing translational value findings. Among explored mechanisms hydrogen-induced neuroprotection, antioxidant, anti- apoptotic anti-inflammatory effects appeared dominant. Unfortunately, additive therapeutic has not yet been demonstrated, thus such are promote clinical testing treatment HIE.
